Welcome to a special post this month about the latest Google Update. It’s not about Page Rank, it’s about what Google has always been about… Speed. The latest Google update is called Caffeine, and it has now been written about extensively on Google’s Blog (googleblog.blogspot.com), or just type in ‘Google Caffeine’ and a lot of useful information will come up. Most analysts agree Caffeine has been slowly released over the past few months, and we are just now seeing the effects of the new search index update. Google has always been about indexing large quantities of data and this latest update will continue to keep Google head and shoulders above any competition in this space.
The most important thing to understand with Google Caffeine is that it’s not a new algorithm, or quality score update. Basically when you boil it all down, Google is now able to do in a day, what use to take a month. What this means, especially for those of us in Search Engine Optimization is that everything can change in an instant. Some of us have already begun to see that. Here is an excerpt from Google’s Blog about Caffeine:
“Caffeine lets us index web pages on an enormous scale. In fact, every second Caffeine processes hundreds of thousands of pages in parallel. If this were a pile of paper it would grow three miles taller every second. Caffeine takes up nearly 100 million gigabytes of storage in one database and adds new information at a rate of hundreds of thousands of gigabytes per day. You would need 625,000 of the largest iPods to store that much information; if these were stacked end-to-end they would go for more than 40 miles.”
On the SEO side we are now seeing Page Rank updates on a daily basis, we are seeing sites that have ranked in the top ten, being replaced by sites with better content every day. Google is looking to see who is updating sitemaps, content, multimedia and providing more value to users every second. What do you need to do? Start with a really quick SEO check:
01. Make sure the website site map is up to date and provides the Googlebot everything it needs to see.
02. Review your webpage titles and your metatags, make sure they are correct and consistent.
03. Review all the tags on your site, with increased indexing speed Google is going to look at everything on your site.
03. ADD MORE RELEVANT CONTENT NOW!!
Well it’s not a Page Rank update, it’s bigger, faster and stronger than a Page Rank update, it’s Google Caffeine, drink up!
